FAROESE ADCP DATA FORMAT ======================== Information about and data from ADCP deployments is stored in a standard format described below. Each deployment is identified by an 8-character name where the first four indicate the site (IFRA, IFRB, NWFB, NWFC, NWNA, NWNB, NWNE, NWNG, NWSB and NWSC) while the last four indicate the year and month of deployment. Thus "NWFB0307" identifies a standard (Nordic WOCE) mooring in the Faroe Bank Channel deployed in July 2003. In the directory and subdirectory for a deployment, all the files have the same name as the deployment with different extensions as listed below. Except for the ".doc" file, these are all ASCII files in fixed format. For the files below, "name" indicates the deployment, e.g.: "NWSB0307" Documentation file ================== name.doc: An MS-WORD document with information about the deployment. Header file =========== name.hdr: Header information in a standard ASCII format including the deployment name, the instrument serial number, the instrument frequency, latitude, longitude, bottom depth, instrument depth (depth of ADCP transducer head), center depth of first bin, bin length, number of bins in each ensemble, number of first ensemble with useful data, time of first ensemble with useful data, number of last ensemble with useful data, time of last ensemble with useful data, time between ensembles, compass correction. Ensemble files are ASCII data files which all start with a copy of the ============== header file, followed by headlines. After that there is one line per ensemble, each line starting with the ensemble number. name.sns: Ensemble number, the time of the ensemble (YYYY MM DD hh mm ss) plus data from the ADCP sensors: compass heading (integer degrees), pitch (degrees), roll (degrees) and temperature (degrees Celsius) in (FORTRAN) format: (I6,1X,A19,I5,F7.2,F7.2,F8.2). For ADCP rigs, the compass heading has been corrected for magnetic deviation as noted in the header. name.spd: Ensemble number and current speed in mm/sec for each bin from 1 to maximum in (FORTRAN) format: (I6,128I5). name.dir: Ensemble number and current direction in integer degrees for each bin from 1 to maximum in (FORTRAN) format: (I6,128I5). Current directions have been corrected for compass deviations. For most of the rigs, the direction has been corrected for magnetic deviation by a constant offset as noted in the header. name.wel: Ensemble number and vertical component of current speed in mm/sec for each bin from 1 to maximum in (FORTRAN) format: (I6,128I5). name.int: Ensemble number and signal intensity for each bin from 1 to maximum in (FORTRAN) format: (I6,128I5). The value stored is the average from the four beams and in the RDI unit. name.srf: Ensemble number, the time of the ensemble and the distance from the instrument to the surface as determined by the SURFACE program in (FORTRAN) format: (I6,1X,A19,I5). Only values based upon all four beams are included. name.dpt: Ensemble number, the time of the ensemble (YYYY MM DD hh mm ss) and the depth of the deployment (calculated from pressure) in (FORTRAN) format: (I6,1X,A19,F7.1). Only the Long Range ADCP's contain this feature (IFRA and IFRB). Values which have been found erroneous either by the RDI software or in the editing procedure have been given error codes. For the real values (pitch, roll and temperature), the error code is -999.99. All the other parameters use -999 as error code. Summary files Three files summarize data quality, average and high speed ============= properties of the series, based on the ensemble files. name.sta: Error statistics listing editing details and the number of flagged observations. name.res: The average speed (scalar average) and velocity (vectorial average) as well as the proportion of non-flagged observations for each bin (in parts per thousand). name.tab: Table listing frequency of high speeds for each bin. Daily average files have one line per day, where each line starts with the =================== date (yyyymmdd). Otherwise these files have almost identical layout as the ensemble files. name.sda Date and vectorially averaged horizontal current speed in mm/sec for each bin from 1 to maximum in (FORTRAN) format: (I8,128I5). name.dda Date and vectorially averaged horizontal current direction in integer degrees for each bin from 1 to maximum in (FORTRAN) format: (I8,128I5). name.nda Date and number of good observations used for horiz. vel. avg. in integer for each bin from 1 to maximum in (FORTRAN) format: (I8,128I5). name.wda Date and vectorially averaged vertical current speed in mm/sec for each bin from 1 to maximum in (FORTRAN) format: (I8,128I5). name.tda Date and daily averaged temperature in real degrees Celsius in (FORTRAN) format: (I8,F8.2). name.ida Date and daily averaged intensity in integer for each bin from 1 to maximum in (FORTRAN) format: (I8,128I5). Average temperature, vertical velocity and intensity are simply computed as averages of good observations for each day, as long as there is at least one. Horizontal current is first detided, i.e. the harmonic constants are determined for each bin using the Foreman program and they are used to predict the tidal part of the current during the observational period which is then subtracted from the non-flagged current measurements. This detided current is then aver- aged over a period as close as possible to 24 hours and 50 minutes and stored for those days where there are at least 6 hours of (non-contiguous) non-flag -ged data If no good observation is for one day, error codes are inserted instead and these are -999 for integer values (speed, direction, number of good observa- tions, vertical speed and intensity) and -999.99 for real values (tempera- ture). Daily summary file is similar to the file "name.res", but is based on the ================== daily average files name.rda Residual (vectorially averaged) current based upon daily averages Tidal constituents based on an adapted version of Foreman's package are ================== summarized in the file name.tal Tidal analysis showing the harmonic constants for the constituents M2, S2, N2, O1 and K1 for all bins. In addition, detailed tidal constiuents for each bin separately are placed in a subdirectory "TIDE" within the directory for each deployment name.txx Tidal analysis for bin number xx. Deployment header with informa- tion on analysis length, number of good and flagged ensembles for the parameters speed and direction, residual current, number of ensembles interpolated, number of ensembles not interpolated, possible filtering of data, list of constituents showing for each of them frequency, E-amplitude, E-gphaselag, N-amplitude, N-gphaselag, major axis, minor axis, inclination, greenwich phaselag, and rotation. AANDERAA Data files =================== The Aanderaa data from each deployment are placed in the directory AANDERAA, and also these files have the same file name as the deployment. There are two files for each deployment and they have the extensions ".aaa" and ".txt". The ".aaa" file starts with the header information for the Aanderaa current meter, followed by current data. The ".txt" file includes statistics on the data, tidal analysis and more. name.aaa Header data: Deployment name, instrument number, instrument type, latitude, longitude, bottom depth, instrument depth, number of records, time of first record, time of last record, time between records, parameter list with a tally of the number of records flagged and not flagged for errors and comments to the data (if any). Current data: Record no., time (YYYY MM DD hh mm), temperature, speed, direction in (FORTRAN) format: (I7,1X,A16,F7.3,2I7). name.txt Header data: As described in name.aaa. Residual current: Vectorial average of all non-flagged records. Tidal analysis: Number of records interpolated, number of records not interpolated, possible filtering of data, list of constituents showing for each of them frequency, E-amplitude, E-gphaselag, N-amplitude, N-gphaselag, major axis, minor axis, inclination, greenwich phaselag and rotation. Directional current distribution: Table listing directional current distribution in 12 direction intervals for several speed intervals. Total and accumulated value for each speed interval. For each directional interval also listing total speed, relative flux, average speed and maximum speed. MICROCAT Data files =================== The Microcat data from each deployment are placed in the directory Microcat, and also this file has the same file name as the deployment. There is only one file pr deployment (".mct"), containing all data. The ".mct" file starts with the header information, followed by a list of the parameters and possible comments. Then follows the data. name.mct Header data: Deployment name, instrument number, instrument type, latitude, longitude, bottom depth, instrument depth, number of first record, time of first record, number of last record, time of last record, time between records, parameter list and comments to the data (if any).
